U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres to Announce New Legislation Protecting Rights of Seniors to Access Traditional Medicare Coverage

BRONX, N.Y. – U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres (NY-15) will on Thursday, August 24 at 10 a.m. join local healthcare advocates and affected seniors and public sector retirees for a news conference to announce new legislation in response to New York City government’s continued attempts to involuntarily kick approximately 250,000 municipal retirees off the traditional Medicare plans they worked decades for and were promised and onto privately run healthcare insurance plans through Medicare Advantage.

The “Right to Medicare Act” would put Congress on the record as affirming that all U.S. seniors have a right to enroll in traditional Medicare coverage that cannot be taken away and that they have a right to choose between traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage. The bill would also prohibit public and private employers from involuntarily forcing seniors to shift from traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage and would amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to require employers to offer an opt-in option for seniors who might want to shift from Medicare to Medicare Advantage.
