 Greening Riverdale
Riverdale is going green! As our last Earth Day Fair proved, there is growing desire within the community to become more proactive about the environment -- both locally and in the context of the global climate crisis. The Riverdale Y is committed to play a leading role in this movement with the introduction of programs, events and other initiatives in this area. We are joining with like minded local groups and institutions, in the belief that building community ties is both related and necessary to addressing environmental issues.
Third Annual Environmental/Recycling Fair
Sunday, June 7, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Bring these recyclables to the Fair -- you can recycle SO much, right here in Riverdale. We'll show you how ...
Recycling
• Clean clothes and other textiles
• Electronics (everything except TVs and small household appliances such as toasters, microwaves, vacuums, etc.).
• CFL (compact flourescent lightbulbs, unbroken)
• Rechargeable batteries
• Hardcover books
• SHREDFEST - shred your personal documents on Pratt Industries industrial shredder, protect your identity and recycle
• Toys -- drop off your gently used toys (NO plush toys, please!) in the bin in the Y's main lobby. We will sell them at the Fair and profits will go to the Y’s children's programming.
Greenmarket Flower Sales
This year, we will have booths set up by New York Greenmarket flower growers. Come fill your garden with locally grown beauty!
 Cool Rainforest Connections Live Show - 11:00 am -- FREE!
by the Wildlife Theater of the Central Park Zoo. The show features intrepid Jungle Exlorer and her puppet sidekick Youcan the Toucan, in an engaging audience participation poem, and the play "The Adventures of Captain Cocoa." The audience joins with humorous superhero, Captain Cocoa, on an adventure to save the rainforest -- only to discover it might be the common person who can really save the day.
 Bring your old Crocs!
Crocs now recycles and donates your used Crocs to impoverished countries via their SolesUnited program.
 Bead for Life
As seen on NBC's Today Show and PBS: Shop for beaded jewelry made from recylcled magazine paper in Uganda, by women who are creating businesses to bring themselves and their families out of poverty.

Come explore Green Kiddush In A Box, an electronic resource to help you plan a Green Kiddush at your synagogue, home or school. Included in this electronic package are suggestions for the kinds of food, products, educational signage and programming that might comprise a Green Shabbat, Holiday Kiddush or other celebration as well as links to websites with ideas for divrei Torah and other Green Jewish programs. Plan your Green Kiddush around Tu bishevat, Sukkot or Shavuot, or when planning a simcha.
